WEST DUNDEE – The Trinity men’s and women’s golf teams competed in their first tournament of 2020 as they played in the Judson Fall Invitational at Randall Oaks Golf Club on Sept. 14.
“Our golfers were really thrilled to get out and play today,” said Jeremy Bialek, the head men’s and women’s golf coach. “I felt like we did alright for the first day out. I am pleased with the men and women in their perseverance and with working through some stuff that we like to take care of in the first week or two.”
On the women’s side, junior Ellie Banks led the way for the Trolls, shooting an 87 for the day. She finished fifth out of 29 competitors individually. She shot par on eight of the 18 holes.
The other two top finishers on the women’s side were freshmen Taylor Martin and Jenna Goss. Martin finished in 13th place with a 95 while Goss shot a 97 to tie for 14th. Sophomore Ashley Keen wrapped up the day with a 98 to earn 17th on the 18-hole course while senior Ashley Martinez sat in 19th place with 100. The women’s team earned a second-place finish out of three teams with an overall score of 377.
For the men, junior Mark Schaaf led the team, finishing 37th out of 67 golfers with an 81. Senior Dan Vos earned 42nd in the event and second on the team with an 83 while sophomore Spencer Rice wrapped up the day in 52nd with an 89.
Senior Nate Kamp shot a 91 to finish in 54th while senior Jared Jonkman ended the day in 62nd with a 96. Overall, the team finished in 10th out of 11 teams with a score of 344 as they shaved off 12 strokes from the previous year.
This was the first competition for any Trinity Athletics team since March 12 when athletics were shut down due to COVID-19. The team competed with social distancing in mind.
