ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis’ women’s lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 decision at Maryville on Friday evening in St. Louis, Mo. Alyson Jines (Temecula, CA/Temecula Valley High School) and Mackenzie Turner (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley)had three goals apiece in the contest.
The Flyers raced out to an early 3-0 lead with three goals inside the first eight minutes of the contest. The Saints (2-12, 1-10 GLIAC) got on the board with less than 17 minutes to play in the opening half but Lewis came right back with goals from Jines and Turner to build a four-goal cushion.
Maryville cut the lead to 5-2 on a goal from Brianna Bravo with 4:15 left in the opening half. The Flyers came right back getting a goal from Turner to regain their four-goal lead. The Saints scored twice in the span of 71 seconds to cut the Lewis lead to 6-4. The Flyers would take a three-goal lead into the intermission on Turner’s third of the half with less than a minute to play.
Lewis outshot Maryville 22-14 in the opening half and put 15 shots on goal to 10 for the Saints.
Maryville scored the first four goals of the second half to grab an 8-7 lead near the midway point of the stanza. Lindsey Traub (Indianapolis, IN/Bishop Chatard High School) tied the game for the Flyers with an unassisted goal with 12:28 to play. The Saints regained the lead 3:28 later on Lexi Taylor’s third of the season. Traub struck again with 4:26 remaining to tie the score at 9.
Maryville scored the game winner with 1:44 to play on Haley Downs’ sixth goal of the season.
Lewis outshot the Saints for the contest 36-to-30 and 25-to-21 in shots on goal. Traub won eight draw controls for the Flyers while Elizabeth Baeder (Hampshire, ILL. /Hampshire High School) picked up six ground balls and Patricia Fotto (Pasadena, CA/La Salle High School) caused five turnovers.
Lewis (1-7, 1-6 GLIAC) is back in action on Sunday taking on McKendree at 12 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.
