ROMEOVILLE – The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Friday (May 21) that Lewis University head men’s and women’s track and field head coach Dana Schwarting has been named the 2021 USTFCCCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year, while Flyer assistant Nathan Probst was selected as the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Schwarting, in his 18th year at Lewis, led the Flyers to the team title at the GLVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 215.5 points. The Flyers won their fifth straight crown after scoring in 11 events and claiming nine event crowns. His athletes have combined for 11 marks ranked inside the top-15 nationally with eight of those inside the top-10. The Flyers also have seven groups ranking inside the top-10 of the #EventSquad Rankings. Lewis will have seven individual entries and two relays at the NCAA Championships.
Probst, in his eighth year at Lewis, coached five athletes in the sprints/hurdles group to reach the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Flyers won four individual events and the 4×400 relay at the GLVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, led by a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200.
Lewis returns to the track this Thursday (May 27) at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. The Flyers will compete in the 4×100 relay, the 400 meters and 100 meters. The track competition begins at 5:15 p.m. (EDT) with the 4×100 relay.
