INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) will increase its sports sponsorship from 22 to 23 with the inclusion of women’s lacrosse, it was announced by the Conference office Tuesday. The GLVC Council of Presidents formally approved the addition on May 22, with women’s lacrosse slated to begin in 2019-20.

The inaugural season of GLVC women’s lacrosse will feature seven institutions, including University of Indianapolis, Lewis University, Lindenwood University, Maryville University, McKendree University, Quincy University, and Rockhurst University.

UIndy played its first four seasons in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and won the last two league tournament titles, as well as the 2019 regular season crown. McKendree has also been a GLIAC associate member since 2015 with a 2017 GLIAC Tournament title to its credit, while Maryville and Lewis recently completed their inaugural seasons of sport sponsorship in the league as well.

Quincy’s squad will be making its debut this year, while Rockhurst has been playing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) since the program’s inception in 2014.Additionally, Lindenwood joins the GLVC as a full-time member in 2019-20, transitioning from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) where it was a member since 2010-11. The Lions women’s lacrosse team, on the other hand, has been competing since 2006 and spent the past six seasons as associate members of the RMAC.

“The Great Lakes Valley Conference is pleased to expand our sports sponsorship with the addition of women’s lacrosse this year,” said GLVC Commissioner Jim Naumovich. “It’s always gratifying for our league to be able to enhance the student-athlete experience by providing them with an opportunity to compete in the GLVC, host a Conference championship for their sport, and provide them with access to an NCAA Division II Championship. We are happy to provide a home for our schools that sponsor women’s lacrosse and look forward to beginning competition in spring 2020.”

The regular-season schedule for women’s lacrosse will be announced at a later date, while the GLVC Championship Tournament is slated for April 24-26 at the site of the No. 1 seed.
