ROMEOVILLE – Lewis’ baseball team dropped a non-conference game to Purdue Northwest, 10-3, on Thursday at Brennan Field. The Flyers fall to 15-18 on the season while the Pride improve to 14-14.
“It was a tough day today,” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. “Obviously the first inning set the tone for the game.
“I thought Nick Stacey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) did a good job keeping us in it during the middle innings and gave our offense a chance to get back in it but we just couldn’t string anything together. I’m confident that we will bounce back and respond this weekend against Rockhurst.”
Purdue Northwest sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning scoring six runs on five hits.
Lewis got a run back in the second when Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) scored on a fielding error by Anthony Agne on a ball hit by Michael O’Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic).
The Pride added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to extend their lead to 9-1.
The Flyers scored a pair of runs in the seventh. Scott Garrow (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) and Michael O’Brien (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to plate the first run and then with two outs in the inning Connor Rutherford (DePere, Wis./DePere) drove in O’Brien with a single to right.
Purdue Northwest scored its final run of the game in the eighth on an RBI double off the bat of John Cory.
O’Brien led Lewis with two hits while Garrow, Rutherford and Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) had a hit apiece. Matt Piento (Indian Head Park, Ill./Lyons) took the loss allowing six runs on five hits and two walks.
The Flyers are back at home on Saturday hosting Rockhurst in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at Brennan Field.
