ROMEOVILLE – Lewis’ men’s soccer team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 2-0 win over Illinois Springfield on Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon at Lewis Stadium. The Flyers improve to 4-0, 1-0 GLVC while the Prairie Stars drop to 2-1, 0-1 GLVC.
Lewis had a chance in the first 10 minutes when Oliwer Mattiasson (Vanerborg, Sweden) got loose on a breakaway but missed his shot wide right. The Flyers broke the scoreless draw in the 15th minute when Seth Dilworth (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) played ahead a long pass to Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) who got behind the defense and beat the keeper for his first goal of the season.
The game remained that way until the intermission. Each side had four shots in the first 45 minutes with Lewis putting two of theirs on goal.
The Flyers added an insurance goal in the 59th minute. Aris Oluwatuyi (Lagos, Nigeria/The International Sports Academy) dribbled down the right flank and took a shot from about 20 yards out that beat the keeper for his first goal of the season.
C.J. Couper (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) made four saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. He made an impressive one late in the game tipping a header over the bar for a corner kick.
UIS outshot Lewis 12-7 in the contest and 4-3 in shots on goal. The Prairie Stars also had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Flyers begin a four game roadtrip this Friday traveling to St. Louis to take on Missouri-St. Louis at 7:30 p.m.
